Rotoscoping means working frame by frame on live-action footage. It was invented for animation in the early 20th century. Today it is part of everyday work in visual effects.
Questions
What is rotoscoping?
In animation, you redraw live-action footage frame by frame. In VFX, you draw animated masks to isolate an element of the image.
How do you use rotoscoping in After Effects?
With the Roto Brush tool. You select the subject on a keyframe, After Effects extends the selection to the next frames, then you fix the errors and refine the edges.
Who invented rotoscoping?
The animator Max Fleischer, in the 1910s.
What is the difference between rotoscoping and green screen?
With a green screen, the cutout is almost automatic. Without one, the cutout is done by hand, with rotoscoping.
Does AI replace rotoscoping?
Not completely. AI segmentation tools speed up the first passes. On a film, edges, hair, transparency and motion blur are still finished by hand.
